Since 1955, Boccia Inc. has waterproofed and repaired basements and foundations throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. With decades of local experience, our team provides proven solutions designed to stop water intrusion, protect foundations, and help prevent long-term structural deterioration.

Why Your Basement Needs Professional Waterproofing

Basements are built with concrete, block, and brick—materials that become porous and develop cracks over time. Because basements sit below grade, hydrostatic pressure forces groundwater through these cracks, cold joints, and utility penetrations, leading to flooding and moisture damage. Basements are naturally prone to moisture. Without proper protection, water intrusion can damage your property, ruin furnishings, and foster dangerous mold growth.

The Hidden Risks of Moisture

The water you can see is the smaller problem. Moisture in a finished basement gives mold what it needs to grow, and mold in a basement does not stay in the basement. Air moves upward through a house — the stack effect — carrying spores from the lowest level into the rooms above. A damp basement is an indoor air quality problem for the whole home, not a storage problem on one floor of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the two most common locations for water entering my basement?

The most common entry point for water in the basement is between the foundation wall and floor slab. This is an unprotected joint and water pressure is greatest at this location. Consequently, this is the area where water leaks the most into basements.

Foundation cracks are the other path — in heavy rain or with poor drainage, water backs up behind the wall and migrates through the cracks.

Water can also leak over the top of the foundation when the top of the foundation is not perched up out of the soil adequately. The waterproofing experts at Boccia understand the various locations where basements leak.

The basement smells musty — should I be concerned about mold?

A musty odor is an indicator of airborne molds. It’s typically a byproduct of damp conditions. Of course mold is not healthy to breathe in so it is important to waterproof and correct basements with damp and musty conditions.

What is a “French drain”?

A French Drain is essentially a drainage system located below the basement floor. Its primary function is removing water that would otherwise accumulate under and around the basement floor. A proper installation includes a filtered perforated POLYETHYLENE ROUND pipe, a drainage envelope, a vapor barrier and cove drainage (DryEdge Floor Molding). A pump typically expels the water the system collects.

What is the patented DryEdge Floor Guard?

The DryEdge Floor Guard is a plastic molding that creates a small gap between the wall and the floor, allowing water to flow through to the sub-floor pipes and draining any wall moisture. Boccia Inc. patented and manufactures the DryEdge Floor Guard. It has been used throughout the United States since 1986 to keep basement floors dry but is exclusive to Boccia Waterproofing in our Long Island, New York region.

Should I coat the interior surface of my foundation wall?

Unless the exterior foundation has been waterproofed or a sub-floor (French) drainage system has been installed, it is NOT advisable to apply a coating to the interior surface of a foundation wall. Coatings, especially dry-lok and tar can trap moisture in the wall and lead to the premature deterioration of foundation walls. This can lead to expensive structural issues.

Some breathable coatings may be appropriate under the correct conditions, though mechanically fastened Foundation Vapor Barrier Panels remain the best solution to covering the interior foundation wall.

What are some of the differences between waterproofing companies in Nassau County?

Experience is a main difference. A lack of experience can lead to costly failures. Franchise companies are often staffed with inexperienced salesmen — who don’t properly diagnose, they sell. A house is the greatest investment one makes in a lifetime and should not be where cheap inexperienced work is allowed.
